One Chelsea player reveals that he told two new signings before they arrived this summer that the club would have a Spanish mafia!
These comments came from Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella. The 25 year old is known for his jokey ways and fun personality.
Marc was speaking to the Chelsea website this weekend during the international break. He was asked about both Robert Sanchez and Moises Caicedo joining the club this summer. Both players played alongside Marc at Brighton, so they had an old connection. It was nice for them to reconnect and have some familiar faces around them at the Stamford Bridge.
What exactly did he mean by ‘Spanish Mafia’?
Cucurella and Sanchez are Spanish, while Caicedo is also a native Spanish speaker, so all three could communicate well in their little ‘Spanish mafia’ as Cucurella refers to it as!
“I am very happy they joined,” Marc said on Sanchez and Caicedo’s arrivals. “I told them it’s an important club, they would feel very good here, that I am happy here, and that we would have a Spanish mafia!”
Cucurella certainly has a good relationship with his old Brighton boys. He went on to say: “We have a really good team, are very close inside and outside the pitch, and I think when these relationships are good then on the pitch we can play together.”
The new coaching staff speaks Spanish as well
Some of the new coaching staff under Mauricio Pochettino, including Pochettino himself, speak Spanish. Marc revealed that it was very beneficial for them. He said: “That we can speak as well with the manager in Spanish makes it easier to explain our mistakes or what we need to do on the pitch.”
All of these could very well be the reasons for Cucurella’s good performances this season, after an underwhelming last season.
