Gabriel Martinelli was just unstoppable for Arsenal against Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday. Eventually, he managed to achieve a feat that no player has managed in the Champions League in 8 years.
Starting on the left-wing, the 22 year old was up against Sevilla right-back Juanlu Sanchez. According to The Daily Mail, the youngster dribbled past Juanlu a record eight times, a feat not achieved in the Champions League for eight years.
The Spanish full-back just couldn’t deal with Martinelli’s explosive pace and the stats prove it. No defender has been beaten more in a Champions League game in the past eight seasons – an unwanted record for Juanlu.
Gabriel Martinelli impresses everyone with his incredible performance
He put in an exceptional display, helping the Gunners to a 2-0 win over Sevilla. The Brazilian created Arsenal’s second goal for Bukayo Saka which ultimately sealed the three points.
Martin Keown labelled Martinelli’s display for the Gunners against Sevilla as ‘absolutely ridiculous’ and the Arsenal legend definately has a point if you look at his dribbling stats.
Spanish newspaper Estadio Deportivo also claimed that Gabriel Martinelli was simply unstoppable against Sevilla. They mentioned him quiet a few times as they gave a rating to every Sevilla player.
Martinelli back to he does best
The Brazil star has become an integral part of Mikel Arteta’s side over the past one and a half year. His ability in one on one situations is a huge weapon for Arsenal.
However, he had a slow start to the season, missing five games due to a hamstring injury. Arsenal will hope that Gabriel Martinelli can maintain this form. This game was certainly a sign that he is back to what he does best, i.e., running at opposition defenders.
