Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has won over manager Erik ten Hag with his impressive performance and attitude this season. The 30-year-old has been one of the brightest performers for the struggling United side this season.
Last season, he was trolled by fans for his frequent errors which he seemed to make in every match. Ten Hag didn’t trust Maguire last season, as he featured in only 16 games in the Premier League. Ahead of this season, the England international was also stripped of captaincy, as the manager appointed Bruno Fernandes as the new captain.
His mentality has been the main factor for Maguire in winning over the trust of ten Hag
The entire football community trolled him last season. He had become a laughing stock for everyone. That alone would’ve been too much for most players to handle. But in addition to that, he was also stripped of captaincy ahead of this season. He was also close to leaving the club, but in the end he chose to stay.
Stars alligned for ten Hag to give Maguire another opportunity this season and he grabbed it with both hands. Both of Man United’s starting center-backs got injured early into the campaign. Lisandro Martinez is out with a long-term injury and Raphael Varane has been in poor form since returning from injury.
Maguire is one of the few positives for the Red Devils this season
The Red Devils have lost nine out of 18 matches in all competitions, conceding 30 goals so far this season. Maguire has started in 9 matches so far, and United have lost just 3 of them. One of them was against Manchester City and one was the 4-3 defeat to Copenhagen where they played more than half of the match with 10 men.
The 30-year-old even scored the winner against Copenhagen, in the Red Devils’ only win in Europe this season.
Harry Maguire has not just impressed ten Hag, but has impressed everyone with his mentality. He has succeeded in winning the manager’s trust, and has been preferred over the out of form Varane in recent matches.
