Jurgen Klopp, has shown unwavering faith in Darwin Nunez, despite some initial concerns over his finishing ability.
Nunez had a mixed debut season at Anfield after joining from Benfica. Nevertheless, he has started the new season on a positive note, scoring three goals in six appearances, including a match-winning brace against Newcastle. Klopp praised Nunez’s never-give-up attitude, attributing his resurgence to consistent chances and impressive goals.
Resurgence of Darwin Nunez
In the 2023/24 campaign, Nunez has already amassed five goal contributions in just six games. Averaging a goal or assist every 46 minutes. Klopp emphasizes that what truly matters is Nunez’s overall performance, reassuring fans that the goals will come naturally.
Klopp, praised the striker’s resilience, stating,
“For a striker, it is important that even if you don’t score, you play well, and everything will fall into place anyway….”
Virgil van Dijk further lauded Darwin Nunez’s potential and contribution to the team. Nunez’s second-half penalty against LASK played a crucial role in Liverpool securing their first three points in the Europa League. Van Dijk stated,
“Everyone has now seen the potential and the quality he has. Up front, the competition is quite good. They all have to push each other, and it’s good to see.”
Nunez’s impressive performances are pushing him up the pecking order for the central forward position, competing with Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota.
Liverpool’s High Press Revival
Klopp’s Liverpool has long been known for its relentless high pressing, suffocating opponents and creating goal-scoring opportunities. However, in recent seasons, the high press seemed to have lost some of its potency. Last season, Liverpool generated only a few goals from high turnovers, a departure from their previous dominance in this aspect.
Nonetheless, signs of a revival were evident in Liverpool’s recent victory over LASK, where Nunez played a pivotal role in regaining possession in the opposition’s defensive third. His combination with Mohamed Salah, resulting in a goal, showcased their potential to ignite Liverpool’s high press.
Nunez has not only been scoring but also contributing assists, with six consecutive assists for Salah. This partnership promises to make Liverpool’s attacking creativity even more potent, as they continue to link up by regaining possession high up the pitch.
Furthermore, Liverpool’s new signing, Ryan Gravenberch, displayed glimpses of his attacking potential with an assist and demonstrated the ability to create high turnovers. His addition to the squad enhances Liverpool’s prospects for more effective pressing and attacking play.
