Latest update on Arsenal January transfer target Douglas Luiz

Arsenal

Arsenal have been interested in Douglas Luiz for over a year now. The Gunners tried to sign him on deadline day in last year’s summer transfer window, but Aston Villa stood firm and managed to keep him in the end.

Arsenal are expected to prioritize their midfield in the winter transfer window and Luiz was an option. Their were a lot of rumors linking the 25-year-old midfielder to the Emirates Stadium. However, the latest reports from transfer insiders say that a move for Luiz is unlikely.

What are the insiders saying about Arsenal signing Douglas Luiz?

The Gunners need a new man next to Declan Rice in the middle of the park. Douglas Luiz was one of their top choices for that role.

TeamTalk share the latest on the situation, and insiders close to the deal are ‘dismissing’ an Arsenal move for Luiz in January because of the finances involved.

The Brazilian is a very important player for Aston Villa. They certainly wouldn’t want to lose him in the middle of the campaign. Villa are also in a much better position than they were during last year’s summer transfer window. This would means that Luiz would cost Arsenal a lot more than it would’ve cost them 14 months ago.

The other options for Arsenal

Martin Zubimendi was another option, but his case is similar to Douglas Luiz. Zubimendi is a key player for Real Sociedad and they too are in a much better position now, even competing in the Champions League this season and already having qualified for the Round of 16.

Arthur Vermeeren and Pablo Maia are huge talents and possible targets for Arsenal. Ruben Neves is also linked with a loan until the end of season and he could be a good signing. Kalvin Phillips could also be an option if Manchester City are prepared to sell him to their Premier League title rivals.

Even with so many options still on the table, the Gunners would be disappointed to miss out on Douglas Luiz last summer.
